Here’s the conversation I have two or three times a week. Someone comes in with a cart they’ve had for four or five years. The batteries are getting tired. The cart doesn’t run like it used to on a full charge, and they’re trying to decide whether to buy a new set of lead-acid batteries and get another four years out of the cart, or spend more money now and switch the whole thing over to lithium.

Both are real options. Neither one is wrong. The right answer depends on how you use the cart, how long you plan to keep it, and honestly, how much you feel like thinking about batteries. That last part matters more than people expect.

So let me tell you how I’d think about it if you brought the question to me in person.

The three real options

Before you can compare lithium and lead-acid, it helps to remember that they’re two of three real choices you actually have as a golf cart buyer. Gas, lead-acid electric, and lithium electric are all legitimate options. Cunningham sells all three, and each one is the right answer for somebody.

Gas carts are the simplest. You put fuel in them, you drive, and you don’t think about charge schedules or whether the batteries liked sitting all winter. If you use your cart on weekends, or seasonally, or at a lake house you visit twice a month, gas doesn’t punish you for the gaps.

Lead-acid electric carts are the traditional electric option. They’ve been around forever, they’re less expensive up front than lithium, and if you don’t mind a little routine maintenance they’ll run great for years. Most electric golf carts on the road today are running lead-acid.

Lithium is the newer electric option. It’s more expensive up front. It’s maintenance-free. It lasts longer than lead-acid before it needs replacing. But it isn’t automatically better for every customer, and that’s what most of this post is about.

When lithium is worth the extra money

Lithium starts to make sense when a few things line up.

You use the cart a lot. If it’s your daily runaround, if you’re on it four or five days a week between the property and the neighborhood and the mailbox, lithium’s advantages start to show up fast. Consistent power through the whole charge cycle. Faster recharge time. Doesn’t lose range as the pack gets older the way lead-acid does. Over a lot of use, that adds up.

You plan to keep the cart a long time. A quality lithium pack will typically outlast a lead-acid set by a wide margin. If you’re keeping the cart eight or ten years, you might replace lead-acid batteries once or twice in that stretch, versus not at all with lithium. The math starts to even out over the long haul, especially when you factor in the labor and downtime for the swap.

If you do not want to do battery maintenance then the battery choice is clear. Lead-acid batteries want you to check the water levels every so often, keep the terminals clean, keep an eye on them. It’s not hard. It takes maybe fifteen minutes a couple of times a year. But some people forget, and some people just don’t want to mess with it. If that’s you, lithium removes the question entirely.

The cart sits for long stretches. Lead-acid batteries don’t like sitting at partial charge for weeks or months. They sulfate, which is a fancy way of saying they lose the ability to hold a full charge over time. Lithium handles storage way better. If your cart is at a lake house you visit every other weekend, or a hunting cabin you use in the fall and the spring, lithium is going to hold up better.

When lead-acid is still the right call

Now the other side. Lead-acid still earns its place, and I’ll be straight about when this is the right choice.

You use the cart lightly. Weekend rounds of golf, a spin around the neighborhood a few times a week. If you’re not putting a lot of hours on the cart, lead-acid batteries will last longer than the ratings suggest and the up-front savings are real.

You’re on a budget and want to keep it that way. Lithium costs more up front. If the difference between the two is going to stretch you, lead-acid is the honest answer. Nobody at Cunningham is going to talk you into a lithium cart to hit a higher price point.

You already have lead-acid, it works fine, and you just need a new set. Repowering your existing cart with a fresh set of lead-acid batteries is the most affordable way to get another four to six years out of a cart you already own and like. That’s a completely valid choice.

You don’t mind the maintenance. Some people actually enjoy tinkering with the cart. If you’re comfortable checking water levels and keeping an eye on the terminals, lead-acid rewards you with lower cost and long life.

The gas question, before you even get to batteries

Here’s what a lot of folks don’t stop to consider. Before you decide between lithium and lead-acid, it’s worth asking whether you want an electric cart at all.

A gas cart doesn’t have batteries in the propulsion sense. There’s a small starter battery, the kind you’d find in a lawn mower, and that’s it. You don’t charge it overnight. You don’t think about range. You put gas in it when the gauge gets low, same as any other engine. For plenty of Louisville and lake customers, that ends up being the simpler answer for the way they actually use their cart.

Yamaha’s QuieTech EFI gas engine is quiet enough that neighbors don’t hear it. Club Car’s Onward with the Kohler engine has strong pulling power for hills and loaded runs. If simplicity and reliability matter to you more than the electric drive experience, don’t skip past gas on your way to the lithium-vs-lead-acid question. It’s worth a real look.

Repowering your existing cart

If you already own a cart that’s on lead-acid and you’re thinking about a switch, that’s called a repower. We do them. Not every cart is a good candidate, and the price varies quite a bit depending on the make, model, year, and what you’re starting with.

If you use the cart a lot, plan to keep it a long time, and don’t want to think about batteries, lithium is worth the extra. If you use it lightly, want to save money up front, or already have a lead-acid cart that’s working, lead-acid is still a completely reasonable choice. And if you want the simplest possible ownership experience of all, look at gas before you commit to either electric option.
